Exploring Deep Tech, AI and Sustainable Production at Digital Catapult’s Industry Webinar

Carly Stone, Executive Sustainability Producer and founder of Planet Positive Production, was invited to speak at Digital Catapult’s ‘Deep Tech in Virtual Production’ webinar, delivered in partnership with Advanced Media Production (AMP).

The session brought together leading voices from across the creative technology and production landscape to explore how deep tech, AI and virtual production are reshaping workflows  and what this means for sustainability, skills and future‑ready capability.

The webinar was hosted by Robin Cramp, Head of Advanced Media Production Studios at Digital Catapult, and featured contributions from:

  • Chris Bouchard — Director & Virtual Production Supervisor, Film Soho
  • Laura Helm — Head of Creative Industries, Digital Catapult
  • Carly Stone — Executive Sustainability Producer & Founder, Planet Positive Production

Across her 20‑minute segment, Carly unpacked the sustainability considerations emerging alongside rapid technological change in production. Her contribution covered:

Digital footprint awareness — cloud storage, energy use, data handling and the growing need for smarter digital practices.

Virtual and AI‑enabled production — how real‑time tools, previs and controlled environments reduce travel, reshoots and material waste.

Storage and archiving choices — LTO tape vs hard‑drive storage, wiping protocols, and the long‑term environmental impact of data.

Workforce inclusivity — ensuring emerging tech doesn’t widen gaps in access, skills or opportunity.

Training and education — why upskilling all departments is essential as sustainability expectations evolve.

Top‑line sustainable production factors — carbon hotspots, challenges, and the practical actions teams can take now.

Carly emphasised that deep tech and sustainability are no longer separate conversations, they are increasingly intertwined, shaping everything from creative decision‑making to long‑term capability planning.

Throughout the session, host Robin Cramp guided the conversation through key themes including:

  • Creative unlocks enabled by real‑time and AI‑driven workflows
  • The sustainability potential of 3DGS and deep‑tech virtual production
  • Future capabilities studios will need over the next 12–18 months
  • The cultural and human shifts required as technology accelerates
  • Practical steps teams can take immediately to modernise workflows

AMP also highlighted its structured support packages — Lite, Pro and Edge — designed to help teams explore virtual production, hybrid workflows and deep‑tech R&D.
