Carly took part in the University of Essex’s “Preparing for a Graduate Role in the Creative Industry” virtual careers webinar, an event designed to support students exploring pathways into film, TV, publishing, brand strategy, marketing and production.
The online session brought together a panel of industry professionals and UoE alumni, each sharing honest insights, practical advice and real‑world experiences from across the creative sector.
For Carly, who grew up in Essex and began her own career journey with very limited guidance, this invitation carried particular significance. With more than 25 years of hands‑on experience. From runner to company founder, Executive Producer and sector consultant, she offered students a grounded, accessible perspective on how to break into an industry that can often feel hard to navigate.

One key top tip Carly shared was encouraging students to follow Loving Your Work across social media, not just because it posts frequent job alerts, but because it reflects the true breadth of the creative industries. From broadcaster placements to volunteering, trainee schemes, entry‑level roles and early creative opportunities, it’s one of the few platforms that consistently showcases the full spectrum of ways to get your foot in the door.
