"The Common Room” invited  Founder Carly to give a live online interview, sharing her sustainability inspiration, to its members.

Launched in summer 2025, The Common Room is an online hub made for creative professionals. Powered by the Mighty platform, it brings together voices from across the industry to share ideas, ask difficult questions, and explore how creative businesses can work more responsibly.

In the session hosted by The Common Room co-founder Lise McQuillin, Carly was invited to discuss sustainability in the cretive industries. The conversation tackled pressing questions facing businesses today, including:

  • What can smaller creative businesses do when it comes to sustainability? What’s the minimum you’d like to see?

  • What are the best examples of large companies genuinely understanding and embedding sustainability in 2025?

  • Will we ever reach a point as an industry where sustainability becomes a core part of company culture?

Following the disucssion, The Common Room summarised Carly's insights to into 3 key takeaways:

1. Start Small, Start Now

Try and choose three things that matter to your company as part of a sustainability plan; whether it be waste, crew wellbeing, travel, carbon. Then keep it simple, stay consistent, and build from there. Don’t aim for perfection, aim for progress.

2. Waste Is More Than Rubbish

Think beyond bins. Waste includes energy, data, unused materials, and even people's time. Have systems in place to reduce, reuse, rehome, and recycle everything.

3. Sustainability must come from above

Without buy-in from company leaders, nothing sticks. Whether it’s a production company or a global brand, culture shifts begin with the decision-makers. It’s not a side task, it’s a business priority.
